Approximately 50 cars have been marked with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Vehicles, exterior walls and postboxes were vandalized, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they announced in a statement.
Officers say they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a individual discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a reddish fluid.
The substance had been applied in the pattern of a swastika, they stated.
Police then located multiple other marked cars and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under laws outlawing the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Officials state initial examinations suggest the liquid was most likely blood from a person.
"At present there remains no clue as to where it came from; investigators are currently not cognizant of any injuries in relation with the occurrence," they stated.
City officials announced they were attempting "to unravel the incident" and have appealed to the public for information.
An important political figure said the incident rendered him stunned and had to be resolved promptly.
"This act strikes at the core of Hanau and revives the trauma of the far-right attack in 2020," he stated on a platform, mentioning the death of nine people by a shooter aiming at individuals of migrant background in February 2020.
