In a first day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “transform” New York City, declaring “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious start to his tenure.

A Groundbreaking Figure

The new democratic socialist, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A moment like this comes rarely and rarer still is it that the citizens whose grasp the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani remarked.

Ignoring suggestions to be modest, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will govern with courage and vision.”

Steering by Democratic Socialist Convictions

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not abandon my ideals for concern of being called radical,” he proclaimed to an enthusiastic response.

The swearing-in was a dual event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's election as a victory over powerful interests.

A Sweeping Blueprint

Mamdani now faces one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a agenda promising:

• Subsidized daycare
• Fare-free public buses
• A cap on rents for approximately 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion expense of these initiatives may prove difficult to secure. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing Political Dynamics

The new mayor will deal with concern from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past social media posts.

Mamdani has sought to ease these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was reportedly surprisingly friendly.

The Fundamental Tests of Leadership

Ultimately, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in providing essential functions: sanitation, curbing the rat infestation, fixing potholes, and ensuring reliable subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's public safety record, citing historically low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky warning about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his address with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
