The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.
Replay technology will be launched at The Championships this year.
Athletes are granted the right to question certain decisions made by the official, mirroring the protocol already in operation at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
The new system will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This step arrives only a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review other decisions, including:
- If a ball has bounced twice.
- If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
- Potential hindrance end of a point.
Notably, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can request.
Case in Point
A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.
The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."
The umpire viewed a replay and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.
Additional Innovations
A further change at Wimbledon this year involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was out or in.
In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
